FÜNF PLUS EINS
Concert series in the Small Water Reservoir
(Kleiner Wasserspeicher), Prenzlauer Berg, Berlin
17th – 19th September 2009
Between the 17th and 19th of September, six of the world’s most active contrabass clarinet players will meet in Berlin to explore, with their instruments in five concerts, the particular architecture and exceptional environment of the Small Water Reservoir in Prenzlauer Berg.
This first-ever contrabass clarinet festival worldwide will take the form of a several-day process consisting of improvisation, concrete work in the space itself, and rehearsals, concluding with a number of public performances. The series opens with a contrast: solo contrabass clarinet compositions set against 5-channel electro-acoustic works. In the ensuing concerts up to five of the participating contrabass clarinet players will perform works, from solo to quintet – often accompanied with electro-acoustic sound. In both late-evening quintet concerts sonic material recorded on-site from the improvisations will, through live-electronics, be brought together with instruments played live. Altogether, 17 compositions will be performed: purely instrumental works ( Grisey, Barrett, Haas, Riehm, Zapf ), pieces incorporating live-electronical elements ( Mitterer, Lang, Seidl ) or tape ( Glandien, Wertmüller, Meadowcroft ), as well as purely electro-acoustic music ( Kim, van der Heide ). A full eleven of the works to be heard at FÜNF PLUS EINS will be world premieres.

Since 2008, the singuhr – sound gallery has been a partner in ohrenstrand.net, a project supported by the German Federal Cultural Foundation’s Network New Music in Berlin. In the second ohrenstrand year, the Berlin artist Stefan Rummel will present his “Fehlformen” installation in the public space at the Wasserturmplatz, which focuses on modifications and distortions of the area.
