Bernhard Gál

Composer, sound artist and musicologist, born 1971 in Vienna. Since 1986 he deals intensively with music and several composition techniques. Study at the Wiener Universität für Musik (sound master) and the University of Vienna (musicology).

Compositions of electro-acoustic and electronic music and also for acoustic instruments, most of the time involving elements of space and performance. Being a sound artist Gál works with sound, light, objects, video projections and space concepts, integrating them into intermedia installations. As a performing (powerbook-) musician solo concerts and improvisations with musicians like Brian Labycz, Tung Chao-Ming and others.

Concerts, exhibitions, sound installations and intermedia art projects in Europe, Japan, Taiwan and the U.S.A. (among others: Studio Five Beekman New York, Konzerthaus Wien, Sammlung Essl Klosterneuburg, Werkstatt Graz, Gallery Sigpo Tokio, Akademie der Künste Berlin, Universität der Künste Berlin, Institut Mathildenhöhe Darmstadt, Deutschlandfunk Köln, GAle GAtes Gallery New York). Participation at festivals (among others: Hörgänge Wien, ICMC 2000 Berlin, Kryptonale Berlin, Wien Modern, Cinema for the Ear Festival Copenhagen, MaerzMusik Berlin, Musashino Public Art Festival Tokio, MATA Festival New York).

Cooperations to combine music with other artistic forms of expression like architecture, painting, performance art and object art; among others with G. S. Sedlak, John Roach, Mandy Morrison, Christian Aichinger and Emre Tuncer. Since 1997 continueing artistical cooperation with the Japanese architect Yumi Kori ("audio-architectural installations").

Compositions for projects for video, dance, theater and radio art. Several prizes and grants (among others Arbeitsstipendium der Kunstsektion des BKA Österreich 2000/2003, Karl Hofer Preis der Universität der Künste Berlin 2001, SKE Jahresstipendium Wien 2002, DAAD Stipendium Berlin 2003).

Several publications on CD, among others: bestimmung new york (Durian, Austria 1999), Defragmentation/blue (Plate Lunch, Germany 2000), relisten (Intransitive Recordings, USA 2001), zhu shui (lowercase-sound compilation, Bremsstrahlung USA 2002).
