rolf julius (1939-2011)

Rolf Julius is considered one of the most important protagonists of sound art. He studied art in Bremen and at Berlin’s University of the Arts. He produced his first photographic works and began experimenting with contemporary music in relation to his visual objects in the 1970s. In 1979, he began to integrate sounds and noises in his visual pieces. From 1980 onwards he produced countless musical actions, sound objects, sound installations, drawings, audiotape compositions with electro-acoustic elements and performances. Julius received a number of grants, including P.S.1 Stipendium (New York), Kunstfonds e.V. (Bonn), Künstlerhaus Bethanien (Berlin), Japan Foundation Fellowship in Kyoto. From 1995-96 he was a guest professor at the Hochschule für Künste, Bremen. In 2005 he was awarded the Hannah Höch Prize.
