Under the direction of the Dutch sound and medial artist Edwin van der Heide, ArtScience Interfaculty of the Royal Conservatoire and the Royal Academy of the Arts in The Hague, together with TU Berlin students, have created the sound installation “Klangspeicher – global/ local” in the Small Water Reservoir. The installation focuses on the sound architectonic dimensions of this unique 19thcentury heritage site. Its function as a water reservoir and its transformation into a space for artistic debate are the starting points of this compositional work.
The installation consists of three loudspeaker systems: an inner circle made of active loudspeakers and a subwoofer at the centre of the reservoir, a circle with loudspeakers on the ground in the middle and outer archways, as well as a circle with eleven loudspeakers high up in the arches. These loudspeaker systems each have their own sound spatial characteristics. The participating students have recorded partial compositions onto them – electronic works that are adapted to the respective system. These partial compositions are arranged in a metacomposition. The title "global/ local" refers to the recipient’s position. The visitor perceives the sounds from close up (local) but, at the same time, observes its spatial distribution and movement throughout the entire reservoir (global).
