Jens Brand was born 1968 in Dortmund. He lives and works in Cologne. 1988-94 he studied free arts at the Kunstakademie of Münster. Under the influence of Phil Niblock and the experience of performances at Het Apollohuis (Akio Suzuki, Yunko Wada and Paul Panhuysen) he turned to experimental music und sound art . Since then he did a multitude of installations, performances and
interdisciplinary works. In 1991 he got the funding prize of Karl-Ernst-Osthaus prize for the video installation „Vereinigung“. In 1992 he started an intense colloboration with Waldo Riedl (room planner, musician and programmer) and founded MeX e.V. – initiated to foster projects in intermedial and experimental music and media. In this framework Jens Brand regularly organizes and directs different events: „76 h“, „lento – Eigenzeit“, „Unter Anderen - Among others 1+2“, „MeX Ampere“, „The very Video“ and others more. He won the prize of Medienatelier München for the computer installation „Affen“ (1998) as well as many grants, composition orders and further awards. He held a scholarship at „Villa Aurora“ in Los Angeles in 2003 and he gave lectures at the Kunstakademie of Münster in 2004.
