Terry Fox
a cloud ladder

back to the season

Since the 70«s, Terry Fox has worked with sound as a sculptural material. Coming from painting, his early performances (with Joseph Beuys, among others) and installations can also be understood as extended forms of artistic practice. The idiosyncratic and historical character of the room has come to the forefront. Through his attempts to conceptualise space, Terry Fox has become a sound art pioneer.
In "A CLOUD LADDER" for the singuhr sound gallery in parochial, he has furnished the steps up the tower of the Parochial Church with short text phrases - terms and statements about time, that the visitor reads while climbing up. Similar to a scale that itself is a function of time, Fox creates a type of text ladder that leads from the entrance up to the roof truss. The quiet resonance sounds of one sound object in the belfry at the end of the tower stairwell corresponds with a experience of quiet reflection.
