»sound spaces berlin« dedicates a special event to the Berlin artist Rolf Julius, who died in 2011. In collaboration with the estate rolf julius (Maija Julius), we present a re-installation of his sound installation »Musik, weiter entfernt« which Julius realized in 1999 in the nave of Berlin's Parochial Church. Rolf Julius wrote about the installation in 1999: »What fascinates me about the Parochial Church is its unfinishedness and its unambiguity as an architectural interior. What one mainly senses is emptiness, height, distance. I want to show this space in its acoustic beauty, make it a theme and emphasize it musically. The space itself will act as an instrument.«
Julius works very carefully with the space. He uses only a few loudspeakers, installed high up in the domes and trusses of the nave. Nevertheless, they develop great musical power. Compositionally, Julius works with two different sonic characters —  a grounding of dense, shimmering sounds in the high register and loosely interspersed musical miniatures, percussive piano impulses and noises in the middle and low registers. The multiple reflections of the sounds on the unplastered brick walls create a fascinatingly multi-layered sound atmosphere. Directly on a brick wall, the sounds seem to literally trickle off the walls. In the center of the nave, on the other hand, they seem echoically distant. Sound and space enter into very close connections here, which can be explored from the most diverse perspectives.
