The »endlose reflexionen« sound installation by Berlin-based artist Stefan Rummel in the side courtyard (Cubo Abierto) of the Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de Oaxaca is an object that can be entered as well as a sonic sculpture. The 6-meter high construction made of wood, whose form is reminiscent of pre-Columbian pyramids, reclines against the eastern wall of the enclosed courtyard like an annex. The installation offers the observer unfamiliar views and insights. Seventeen steep steps lead to the top and end just before the upper end of the wall is reached. The subjective perception of the space changes on each step. Sounds can be heard from the loudspeakers integrated into the sculpture that Rummel himself recorded in Mexico and in the museum’s surroundings and then processed electronically. Depending on the visitor’s position, the reflections of the sounds change in the space and mix with noises that can be heard from the city. Sounds that seem familiar keep changing in »endless reflections«. The installation addresses not only the place of presentation itself — the architecture, history and atmosphere of the courtyard — it also offers the visitor space for interpretations and associations that go beyond this. In doing so, Stefan Rummel processes observations and experiences that he was able to glean during a one-month residency in Oaxaca as part of the German-Mexican residency and exhibition project »entre límites«. The exchange project, which the Goethe-Institut Mexico and singuhr — projekte Berlin is running from 2015 to 2017, invites German sound artists to Mexico and Mexican sound artists to Germany to develop and present new sound installations in multiple-week residencies.

Stefan Rummel’s installation »endlose reflexionen« is the second exhibition project by »entre límites« in Mexico following the exhibition project by Stefan Roigk (27.3.-31.5.2015) at the Museo de Arte Contemporáneo Alfredo Zalce (MACAZ) in Morelia.
A project by the Goethe-Institut Mexiko and singuhr — projects Berlin in collaboration with Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de Oaxaca (MACO).
