claudia märzendorfer born in 1969 in Vienna, lives and works in Vienna’s studios for sculpture Bildhauergebäude des Bundes.

Claudia Märzendorfer studied from 1994 to 2001 at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna and graduated in Sculpture with Bruno Gironcoli. The artist sees the world as material and understands sculpture as a poetic concept of form. She works with installations, film as sculpture, photography, drawing, sound and text. Her work has a conceptual rigor and is often done in plain black and white. Märzendorfer works with analogue techniques in the digital age, deals with archives and makes site-specific installations.

With the work »Frozen Records« she was invited as artist in residence to Tesla am Podewil'schen Palais in 2006. In 2012, the artist developed the work »Musictypewriter« with the support of the Arnold Schönberg Archive from Schönberg's patent act to a music typewriter. In 2018 and 2019, films were made following the practice of live acts of the cultural history of instrument destruction in the 20th century.

Her works have been shown in numerous performances and solo presentations and are frequently represented in public collections and implemented in Kunst am Bau/Kunst im öffentlichen Raum-projects. For example at Kunsthaus Mürz (2020), MQ ART BOX (2020), Garage Kunsthaus Wien (2019), OK Linz (2019), at the Festival Wien Modern (2018) with the Mushroom Book of the John Cage Trust (New York), singuhr — projekte Berlin (2018), KM-H Graz (2017), MSU Maribor (2016).

2019, Claudia Märzendorfer was an Artist in Residence at the Centre of European Arts, Hellerau (D). In 2017 she received the Gerhard and Birgit Gmoser Prize of the Jury of the Vienna Secession. In 2014, she received the Outstanding Artist Award in the visual arts section of the Federal Chancellery of Austria. In 2010 she received the State Scholarship for Fine Arts. For the new period starting in 2021, Märzendorfer is a member of the BIG ART advisory board of the Bundesimmobiliengesellschaft, Kunst am Bau.

In her practice Claudia Märzendorfer deals with ephemeral sculptures and installations. She sees time and music as the only neutral currencies.
